EARTHCARE SUDBURY is a unique partnership between the City of Greater Sudbury, 37 community agencies, organizations and businesses, and individual Sudburians. EARTHCARE SUDBURY is all about community organizations and individuals coming together to chart our own course for a "greener", more sustainable community in the future. Click here to view the EARTHCARE SUDBURY "Declaration of Community Partners".
The focus of EARTHCARE SUDBURY is on enhancing our environment, ensuring economic viability, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to improve the quality of life in our community. This means addressing environmental challenges – such as climate change – head on, and developing the best solutions for Sudbury.
Recently, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities recognized Sudbury as a "model community" for our EARTHCARE initiative – a process that other communities can follow in the years to come.
To accelerate our path towards community sustainability, EARTHCARE SUDBURY has launched an important action planning process. This process is bringing together community partners and residents to develop a "made in Sudbury" Local Action Plan (LAP) for Climate Protection. Our plan will provide a blueprint for how we, as a community, will take action to protect our climate, while improving our quality of life and strengthening our economy.

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) is a federal government department specializing
in energy, minerals and metals, forests and earth sciences. At NRCan,
we deal with natural resource issues that are important to Canadians.
We look at these issues from both a national and international perspective,
using our expertise in science and policy. How we manage our land and
resources
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) provides four main services to Canadians.
- We conduct leading-edge science and technology to provide Canadians with ideas, knowledge and technologies. This helps Canadians use their country's resources wisely, reduce costs, protect the environment and create new products and services.
- We build and maintain a national knowledge infrastructure on Canada's land and resources, so all Canadians can easily access the latest economic, environmental and scientific information.
- We ensure that federal policies and regulations on issues such as the environment, trade, the economy, Canadian land and science and technology enhance the natural resources sector's contribution to the economy. At the same time, we make sure these policies and regulations protect the environment and the health and safety of Canadians.
- Together with international agencies and other nations, we promote Canada's international interests. This helps Canada meet its commitments related to natural resources, and keeps access open to global markets for Canadian products, services and technology
NRCan is represented on the CEIN by its Community Energy Systems Group, which helps Canadian communities meet their energy needs more efficiently and cost-effectively. The Group identifies and develops opportunities for the use of district heating and cooling, combined heat and power (cogeneration), waste heat recovery, thermal storage, and local sources of renewable energy, particularly biomass. Interests include:
- planning and implementing projects in both urban centres and remote communities,
- developing software for system design, improving performance of district cooling systems, and
- promoting and fostering the adoption of integrated energy systems.
The Group operates a laboratory for testing and developing district energy technologies. This enables systems to be simulated and quick responses to clients' problems.
In addition to serving all three levels of government, the Group's clients also include engineering firms, energy equipment manufacturers, and utilities.
Clients use the Group's capabilities for:
- assistance in developing community energy plans
- conducting feasibility studies
- designing district heating and cooling systems
- assistance with project management
- trouble-shooting requiring specialized expertise
- development of system-design software
- innovative enhancements to new and existing equipment
- development of new district cooling technologies
- writing technical and promotional manuals
- assistance in linking system suppliers with potential adopters.
